Of Dreams and Visions in the Night

This is a story related by a believer in Christ about an encounter from the Lord. The individual had been seeking a renewal and reinvigoration of his relationship with the Lord through searching in the Scriptures and the working of the Holy Spirit. One night while in a deep sleep during this period, the individual, whom I will call SEEKER to maintain anonymity, was awakened and became aware of a clear thought in his mind from the Holy Spirit to the effect, “Wake up, I want you to meet Me.” He had been quickly pulled through what seemed like layers of sleep into wakefulness. After opening his eyes SEEKER could see nothing but a dark bedroom and could barely make out the furniture and other objects in the room. However, he became aware of a presence in the room near him, although there was no physical person that could be seen with the eyes. When his attention was drawn to this presence, SEEKER immediately recognized it as the Holy Spirit, but at the same time it was an individual, the Lord Himself! Although the Lord could not be seen with the eyes, He was being seen through the individual’s soul or spirit without the aid of vision and no doubt through the enablement of the Spirit. Thus there was no physical shape or structure to observe. It was one soul seeing another soul at that level of the mind. The following is a description of the Visitor that came as a vivid impression within SEEKER’s mind during this meeting.

The Visitor had an inner light not visible to the naked eye, but evident through His presence that registered in the soul.  Immediately there was the strong perception of the Visitor’s demeanor and attitude which seemed transparent, so that His feelings could almost be read like a book, but at the same time, whose thoughts were still concealed from SEEKER. Thus, very striking was the intense love this Person had that emanated as rays from the sun. His love was perfect and unvarying. But most amazing was how He was completely devoid of any negative emotion: The Visitor held no grudge, no umbrage, no sense of disappointment or disapproval, no condemnation or judgement. It was love of the purest and dearest kind that drew the object of affection in as though with loving arms–a love that was incredible and beyond words! SEEKER marveled about how that could be possible considering the sinful person he was and yet still be loved in this way. Along with love was the sense of the Visitor’s delicate meekness and kind and gentle demeanor. Finally, the Visitor was beautiful in His essence, as a perfectly cut gem that brillantly gleems with a multifaceted light in an array of colors.

Another striking impression was friendship. SEEKER sensed a strong friendliness from the Visitor that was warm and personal, that gave the sense that He really liked him and wanted his company–all which made SEEKER feel comfortable with Him. This characteristic too was perfect, unquestionable, leaving the impression that there was no friend like this One, whose loyalty was unwavering and everlasting. Then, along with this was the impression of personal knowledge and acquaintance. There was the unmistakable perception that SEEKER had been personally known by the Visitor for a very long time, even before he was born! That was the clear sense, as mysterious as it was.

While contemplating and marveling over these things, after a short time, the session seemed to be over without notice. The Visitor was gone or at least the perception of His presence came to an end. There were no words spoken, but the encounter consisted solely of an observation. This meeting must have been short in duration, but long enough to afford a “good look” at this unexpected Visitor in the night. SEEKER looked out over the room and all was covered in the darkness of night as it had been all along. After some thought, SEEKER rolled over, closed his eyes, and fell back to sleep. For the next several days he felt a warm glow of peace and joy in his heart and a deep sense of longing for the company of the Visitor. He would like to be with this Visitor again who truly was his friend, a friend like no other. At the same time, he reflected on what he had experienced. What really happened? What is the significance?

One unusual takeaway was the realization that this Visitor gave a sense of reality that seemed true and substantive, that was apart from but transcendant of the physical world. However, the most important thing that SEEKER began to realize is regardless of such a remarkable encounter, it was an experience that must take a back seat to the Holy Scriptures. The Bible contains the true Word of God and His revelation to mankind that holds preeminence over any sort of experience. God’s Words are spirit and transcend the physical realm to bring His grace and presence to needy souls. Thus SEEKER committed to continue focusing on the Word. He was able to take up the Bible with a fresh interest and solid confidence in its veracity and insight of how God’s love for His sheep is real and how He would strive to seek and save the lost to bring them into His wonderful fellowship forevermore through the gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Raised a Catholic but became born again in young adulthood principally through reading Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell (I highly recommend it). I prefer the Reformed faith and subscribe to the Five Solas, but hold to baptism by immersion. I also hold to a continuationist view of the doctrine of Spiritual gifts. To me, the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, with a Christocentric theme in its entirety. I hold to an orthodox preterist hermeneutic and prefer the Postmillenial eschatology as the most biblical doctrine of God’s plan for His kingdom in Christ.
